In chapter 3 of his book, Letters to the Church, Francis Chan discussed
the challenge of making God the central focus of church services in our
consumer mentality culture. The question was raised, “Do our desires
overpower God’s simple and perfect design for His church?” We seek to be
appealing and offer the next new thing, but is this a never-ending game? The
staff agrees that we must differentiate between what we want and what God
commands. God has shown the plan for the church in His Word, and we must
follow this design.
Following the example of the early church in the Bible, we are to have
fellowship and communion with believers (Acts 2:42-47), be devoted to
prayer with excitement (Acts 4:31), to the public reading of scripture, to
preaching and to teaching (I Timothy 4:13). God desires for His children to
fully experience Him through the church. He has given us a blueprint to
follow. We should follow Him with excitement and anticipation!
